PERSECUTION
1. Why do people persecute Christians, even when they are doing good?
- "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated
me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not
belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates
you. Remember the words I spoke to you: No servant is greater than his master.
If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will
obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the
One who sent me" (John 15:18-21).
- "You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of
life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferingswhat
kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured.
Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life
in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to
worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and
have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it" (2 Timothy
3:10-14).
- "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us,
that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world
does not know us is that it did not know him" (1 John 3:1).
2. Do good to and pray for those who persecute you. Love your
enemies.
- "You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye,
and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone
strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue
you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one
mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the
one who wants to borrow from you" (Matthew 5:38-42).
- "You have heard that it was said, Love your
neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those
who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to
rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous"
(Matthew 5:43-45).
3. Imitate Stephen, who prayed for his persecutors as they were stoning
him.
- Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do
not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep" (Acts
7:60).
4. In dealing with your persecutors be wise and innocent.
- "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.
Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16).
5. If and when you are falsely accused, trust God to lead you.
- "Be on your guard against men; they will hand you
over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. On my account you will be
brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they
arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be
given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking
through you" (Matthew 10:17-20).
6. One need not get depressed due to severe persecution. Paul
testifies to that.
- "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed;
perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not
destroyed" (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).
7. Those who suffer for the sake of Christ will be blessed and should
count it an honor to do so.
- "Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful
trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice
that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his
glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for
the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer
or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a
Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name" (1 Peter
4:12-16).
8. Never be ashamed to be identified with those who are being persecuted.
Rather, suffer with them, if need be.
- "Do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or
ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of
God, who has saved us and called us to a holy lifenot because of anything we have
done but because of his own purpose and grace" (2 Timothy 1:8-9).
9. Do not be unsettled or let the devil lead you away from the faith
through persecution.
- "We sent Timothy, who is our brother and Gods
fellow worker in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your
faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. You know quite well that we were
destined for them. In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling you that we would be
persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well know" (1 Thessalonians 3:2-4).
10. Jesus says that some do fall away when they are persecuted.
- "The one who received the seed that fell on rocky
places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no
root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word,
he quickly falls away" (Matthew 13:20-21).
11. Some compromise the gospel to avoid persecution. Don't be like that.
- "Those who want to make a good impression outwardly
are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being
persecuted for the cross of Christ" (Galatians 6:12).
12. If persecutors threaten you, obey God rather than man, as did Peter and
John.
- "Then they called them in again and commanded them
not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, "Judge
for yourselves whether it is right in Gods sight to obey you rather than God. For we
cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard" (Acts 4:18-20).
- Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey
God rather than men" (Acts 5:29).
13. Those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake will be blessed.
- "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of
righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people
insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they
persecuted the prophets who were before you" (Matthew 5:10-12).
- "For I am already being poured out like a drink
offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that dayand
not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing" (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
