Love
one another in response to God's love for us |
-
"This is how God showed his love among us: He sent
his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that
we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another" (1 John
4:9-11).
Love
one another deeply |
-
"Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the
truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the
heart" (1 Peter 1:22).
-
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love
covers over a multitude of sins" (1 Peter 4:8).
Love
is absolutely essential; one is nothing without it |
-
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but
have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of
prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can
move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and
surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing" (1 Corinthians
13:1-3).
Paul
describes what love really is |
-
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it
does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily
angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the
truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1
Corinthians 13:4-7).
Do
not seek honor and prestige but, like Jesus, be ready to serve |
-
"Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become
great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your
slavejust as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his
life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:26-28).
Attending
to the needs of others is doing it for Christ |
-
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I
was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I
needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and
you came to visit me. "Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did
we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we
see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see
you sick or in prison and go to visit you? "The King will reply, I tell
you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did
for me'" (Matthew 25:35-40).
Don't
become weary in doing good |
-
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the
proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9).
Follow
the golden rule |
-
"So in everything, do to others what you would have
them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 7:12).
We
must use our
gifts to serve others |
-
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same
Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds
of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. Now to each one the
manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).
-
"Each one should use whatever gift he has received to
serve others, faithfully administering Gods grace in its various forms. If anyone
speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should
do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through
Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever" (1 Peter 4:10-11).
