Anger is not in itself sinful |
Jesus
was angry with the Pharisees |
- "He looked around at them in anger and, deeply
distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand."
He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored" (Mark 3:5).
God
is angry with the wicked |
- "God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses his
wrath every day" (Psalm 7:11).
Cain's anger turned into hate and
murder |
Hot words stir up strife |
- "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word
stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1).
A hot-tempered man creates
dissension |
- "A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a
patient man calms a quarrel" (Proverbs 15:18).
Fits of rage and anger belong to our
sinful nature |
- "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual
immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy,
fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and
the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the
kingdom of God" (Galatians 5:19-21).
Through the Spirit, we can overcome
the sin of a hot temper |
- "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such
things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature
with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the
Spirit" (Galatians 5:22-25).
Be slow to become angry |
- "My dear
brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to
become angry, 20 for mans anger does
not bring about the righteous life that God desires" (James 1:19-20).
Overlook an offense |
- "Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the
matter before a dispute breaks out" (Proverbs 17:14).
- "A mans wisdom gives him patience; it is to his
glory to overlook an offense" (Proverbs 19:11).
Handle anger in a godly way.
Resolve anger quickly |
- "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun
go down while you are still angry..." (Ephesians 4:26).
